cheap ink & wireless printing through router = A+ by my standards February 15, 2010 Mr. Ersh (St Paul, MN USA) I found the setup to be surprisingly simple. I have a normal wireless router with 4 ethernet ports. I used the enclosed CD's to hard wire the printer to my desktop (through my router). Then, I connected my laptop to my wireless network and clicked "setup printer" and the printer was basically already there...so cool! This thing is networked, so I can print to either my desktop (hard wired) or my laptop (wireless).
The printer uses 920XL ink cartridges, so printing cost is maybe half of some other inexpensive HP printers. Here's my opinion on HP printers. You can buy a $40 printer and pay $.10-12/page for black & white. You can buy a $200 printer and pay $.04-.05/page. This printer is pretty close to the expensive ones for ink cost per page. You'll need to do some research (HP cartridges are rated for number of pages) for accurate comparisons.
Thanks, Paul.
Could Not Get This To Work With Windows 7 February 15, 2010 Peter Ernst (Palisades Park, NJ USA) The Officejet 6000 (E609e) printer is supposedly Windows 7 compatible through a download. However, after going through numerous chat sessions with the HP help desk, as well taking my printer cable into the computer store to have it checked, and uninstalling/reinstalling to see if that was the issue, I have concluded that this is a lost cause and it's time to get another printer. I am relatively computer savvy and I was very careful to follow the steps, including not hooking up the computer until the software was loaded, and still it just does not work. I have given this adventure hours of time and it's time to try another printer.
Disappointed February 2, 2010 James R. Bullard (California) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm disappointed in this printer because it has several flaws. First, you have to wait for it to go through all sorts of gyrations before it prints when it's been sitting for a while. Then after it prints it does the same thing again right after it prints. It moves the print head back and forth, it does some paper feeds and other such things. It's huge amount of wear and tear that doesn't have to happen. I've owned a lot of HP printers and none of them did this wasteful behavior. I don't expect this printer to last nearly as long a previous HP printers even though it's an "office" printer that should be designed for higher wear and tear.
On previous HP printers it was easy to print normal paper and envelopes without having to change things. To print an envelope on this printer you have go through and setup for an envelope when you want to print one. Another waste of time.
Today it ran out of black ink. We have only had this printer a few weeks and have not done that much printing. Our old HP 5100 consumer level printer lasted much longer than this per cartridge. Come on! This is suppose to be a office printer that has big cartridges that last a long time. I guess it's just smoke and mirrors from HP.
My feeling is that HP has gone downhill a lot from what they used to be. We have owned a lot of HP printers and this printer falls way short of the old HP printer quality.
A Great Purchase February 1, 2010 Joseph F. Barnes (Plymouth IN) We have 2 laptops, one on each level of our home. The HP 4780 wireless printer allows us to print without any of those extra cables. Works great. Its placed in on a desk, laptop can be used from couch or bedroom. We don't print alot but when we do, the hp 4780 does its job.
Price was cheaper than Best Buy or Staples, no sales tax, reasonable shipping (which still made the item les than the big box stores.
HP Officejet 6000 printer January 31, 2010 Rowena Lawrence I like the HP 6000 printer very much. It prints good pictures and if you use fast/economical printing for regular printing, stand back to catch your pages! Very fast!
This is the first HP printer I have ever bought and am glad I decided to try it.
